Letting Type Talk 05 & 06

Letting Type Talk is a series of posters/visual essays that provides insight on a very important aspect of design: innovative exploration of typography. Think of it as a blog in printed form. It is a love letter to a select few typographers from across the globe - those who have shaped the world of graphic design and visual culture through their contributions to the field. For some, this may even serve as an introduction to new ways of talking through type.

Switching the focus of the series to modern design studios, these final two installments of Letting Type Talk concentrate on systematic approaches to design: solutions that are, in a sense, planned and structured so that all pieces can fall into place, removing illustrative "guesswork" by confining all design and typographic decisions to a system. The focus on systematic design also affected how both of these posters were created, relying on specific underlying grids and finessed type to reflect the studios' respective work.

The final two entries include the work of Edwin van Gelder of Mainstudio and Paul McNeil and Hamish Muir of MuirMcNeil. These two studios focus on mathematical and grid-based arrangements of type, favoring sleek and modern ways of expressing information, and working systematically with typography at the forefront of the design (or in many cases, the only part of the design).

Letting Type Talk/05 - Edwin van Gelder

The fifth in this series is titled "Systematic And Typographic" and covers the restrained yet rhythmic type and purely gridded layouts of Dutch designer Edwin Van Gelder.

Letting Type Talk/06 - Paul McNeil And Hamish Muir

The sixth in this series is titled "Parametric" and covers the algorithm-based fonts and dynamic letterforms of London-based typographers Paul McNeil and Hamish Muir.
