Uzumaki Typeface Collection

Typeface | Posters

The Uzumaki is a family of typefaces inspired by the grotesque and otherworldly illustration style of horror mangaka Junji Itō. The Standard Condensed, Thin Extended, and Thick Extended weights make up the Uzumaki Typeface Collection.

This typeface captures the feelings of unease and tension that Itō’s illustrations elicit, featuring sharp angles, diamond tittles, and a meshing of traditional serif and slab-serifs elements to create a sort of Frankenstein’s monster of a type style. It’s a little dark, a little imposing, and a little spooky.

A few of the major recurring themes in Itō’s manga include body horror, envy, and the supernatural. This collection ties these themes together between the three weights: it’s sickly and frail, but still subtly dignified, sitting comfortably in the crossroads of beauty and death.

Images used here to sample the typeface belong to Junji Itō.

This typeface collection is available for purchase here.

The Uzumaki Typeface Collection can be used in a range of applications, but would feel right at home in a horror film logo, a spooky comic masthead, in the credits of a psychological thriller, or printed on invitations for a vampiric masquerade ball.
