Inkborne Woodblock Series

Woodblock Prints | Typeface

In celebration of one of the greatest video games of our generation, 2015’s Bloodborne by From Software, I created a series of woodblock prints featuring the names of the game’s twenty-one main bosses. To achieve the crude and splotchy texture on the type, I haphazardly finger-painted and smeared block printing ink onto the letters and stamped them over and over - you can actually see my fingerprints in a few of them! Since I physically only had one of each letter, and none of the letters matched, creating the typographic lockups was essentially the equivalent of playing Tetris with type.

I stamped about ten or so versions of each letter for variety’s sake (275 letters total), scanned them all and composited them together for the final pieces, along with a sample of concept art scanned from the Bloodborne Official Artworks book. In addition to the prints, I also built a custom typeface - Zoetrope - to go along with each composite.
